Vein Clinic DermOne Dermatology and Dr. Kamran Goudarzi Pay Nearly $900,000 in False Claims Act Case
We filed suit under the False Claims Act on behalf of our whistleblower client, a former vascular clinical instructor who holds certifications as Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT), registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) and registered phlebology sonographer (RPhS). She brought this case against her then-employer, DermOne Dermatology, and the physician who ran its offices in North Carolina, for fraud. Specifically, these defendants were performing medically unnecessary vein procedures on patients, including vein laser ablations and sclerotherapy, which were being billed to Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare. Performing these unnecessary procedures was harmful to the patients but was lucrative to these defendants.
The United States Department of Justice intervened in our case, and the defendants collectively paid nearly $900,000 to resolve the fraud claims. Our client and other relators in a similar case were paid a Relator's Share of 20% of the total recovered.
